Our School

Metropolitan Lighthouse Charter School is a tuition-free, K–12 public charter school located in the Highbridge neighborhood of the Bronx. Growing by a grade level each year, MetLCS prides itself in having a family model that focus on the whole child. Admission to our school is based on a lottery system.

Funding and Charter

Metropolitan Lighthouse Charter School receives public funding from federal and state resources. Managed by Lighthouse Academies, we operate under our charter as authorized by the New York City Department of Education.

Our History

In the fall of 2010, MetLCS began as a K-2 school in the Soundview neighborhood of the Bronx. In the fall of 2014, MetLCS moved into our permanent location in Highbridge neighborhood of the Bronx and continues to serve families throughout the south Bronx. We work diligently to remove all barriers and stop at nothing until we prepare all scholars for college, career, and life. That promise continues to fuel us today.

Active Community Engagement
When we say the “Met Family”, we truly mean family.  Every scholar is a member of a house that provides a level of community across grade levels.  Being that we are a small school with no more than 54 scholars per grade level, every scholar is well known by our staff as more than just a number.  Visitors are invited into the Met living room when they enter our building and the hospitality doesn’t stop there.

Restorative Discipline
We believe in multiple second chances. The road to creating great people takes many turns and has many bumps along the way. We are par for the course because we are invested in the personal development of all our scholars. When our scholars mess up or disappoint us, we unapologetically support them through their challenges.

Creative Learning Environments
We believe schools should be organized around learning and personal development, not around compliance and discipline. Schools should be a place where teachers and scholars can express themselves and learn more about who they are and who they want to become. We believe that this happens through exploration, failure, and structures that promote creativity. Our classrooms, hallways, learning spaces, and school schedule reflect these values.

High Expectations Paired with High Engagement
We believe that every scholar has the ability to learn, excel, and make huge academic gains when educators raise the academic bar and invest scholars into what they are learning. When educators invest scholars through connections, relevance, and engagement strategies, scholars work harder, focus longer, and enjoy what they are learning.

Our Mission

Metropolitan Lighthouse Charter School has a singular mission to prepare students from the Metropolitan for college, career, and life.
